Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Good

The catch-per-unit-effort for bluegill in Herrin #2 Lake was 98 per hour of electrofishing. Quality indices improved compared to 2018. The proportion of bluegill larger than 6 inches increased to 46%, which exceeded the upper level of the management plan goal. twenty percent were also larger than 7 inches. Bluegill condition dipped just below management goals.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Developing

Generally few channel catfish are collected from Herrin #2 Lake during spring electrofishing surveys, and 2019 was no exception, as these fish were collected at a rate of 14 per hour. Size ranged from 16 to 22 inches, and condition was excellent. The channel catfish population in Herrin #2 Lake is maintained by IDNR stockings which occur every other year. Site Regulation: 6 per day creel limit.

CRAPPIE

Fair

Both white and black crappie exist in Herrin Lake #2, but these fish don’t always show up in annual surveys. Only four black were included in the 2019 electrofishing sample. These fish were around 9 inches in length and displayed poor body condition.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Good

Largemouth bass were collected at a rate of 90 per hour in spring 2019, which represented a decrease over the previous year but staying well above the management goal. Quality and condition of these fish increased getting near to the goal for these indices. Thirty-seven percent of bass were larger than 12 inches, and 21% were longer than the 15-inch minimum size limit. Bass body condition increased to a relative weight of 81 but remained substandard. Site Regulation: 15" length limit and 3 per day creel limit.

Location: Herrin #2 Lake is located approximately 9 miles south of Herrin, Illinois and just west of Route 148 in southern Williamson County.

Description: Herrin #2 Lake is a 58-acre city-owned impoundment surrounded by forest and has a gravel access road and boat ramp.
