Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Poor

The Bluegill population appears relatively poor. Only one Bluegill over 7 inches was collected during the 2021 spring nocturnal electrofishing survey. No Bluegill over 8 inches have ever been collected in this lake. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Average

Channel Catfish are present in Blue Wing Lake, but few have ever been collected. Experimental gill nets deployed during the 2021 fall netting survey should gather more data on the catfish population. Site Regulation: 6 fish daily limit.

CRAPPIE

Very Good

Blue Wing Lake appears to have a very good crappie population consisting of both black and white crappie. Past trap net surveys conducted during spring have indicated an abundance of crappie over 10 inches. Crappie over 12 inches in length are also present. Trap nets deployed during the 2021 fall netting survey should gather better information on the crappie population. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Average

An electrofishing survey has never been conducted on Blue Wing Lake until this year (2021). Updated electrofishing equipment now allows us to effectively electrofish in the high conductivity water present in Blue Wing Lake. The 2021 spring nocturnal electrofishing survey indicates a decent Largemouth Bass fishery in Blue Wing Lake. We collected 18 bass during 20 minutes of electrofishing, 33% of which were within the 14-18 inch protected slot. No bass were collected over 18 inches. Site Regulation: Creel limit of 5 fish under 14" and one fish over 18"; there is a protected slot of 14–18" (no possession).

Location: Pyramid State Park is located south of Pinckneyville in Perry County. From State Route 127 head west on Pyatt-Cutler Road. About 7 miles west of Pyramid State Park turn south into the Denmark Section.

Description: Blue Wing Lake is a strip cut lake located on the Denmark Section of Pyramid State Park. Facilities at this 46-acre lake include a concrete boat launch, floating dock and bathroom facilities.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: Thanks to upgraded electrofishing equipment, electrofishing is now an effective sampling tool for this lake.
Therefore, the 2021 spring nocturnal electrofishing survey was the first ever conducted on Blue Wing Lake. All fishery information prior to 2021 was based on spring trap netting surveys. The electrofishing survey indicated the Largemouth Bass fishery is not as good as many other lakes within the park. However, the lake should offer good angling opportunities for crappie. Given that Pipestone Creek runs directly through the lake, contamination of riverine species is likely a driver of fish community dynamics in the lake. The 2021 fall netting survey should complete our understanding of the fish community in Blue Wing Lake.

Additional Lake Information: Note: A new horsepower rule went into effect February of 2018: Unlimited HP motor limit and all boats/motors must be operated at no wake speed.

Site Regulations:
Largemouth bass: 5 fish under 14” and fish 1 over 18” limit, 14–18 inch protected slot (no possession)
