Fish Status |
Poor | The bluegill population remains stunted and relatively poor. During the spring electrofishing survey, 153 Bluegill were collected, all of which were under 7 inches in length. Bluegill over 7 inches are rarely collected in surveys at this lake. | |
Good | Dongola City Lake contains a good fishery for Channel Catfish. During 2021, four were collected during the spring electrofishing survey and 35 were collected during the fall netting survey. Channel Catfish up to 8.5 lbs. were collected. Non-vulnerable (8-10 inch) Channel Catfish are stocked annually. | |
Poor | Dongola City Lake has a relatively poor crappie population consisting of both black and white crappie. Only 11 crappie were collected during both the spring electrofishing and fall netting surveys. Those that were collected ranged in length from 6-8 inches. Anglers are encouraged to harvest all crappie they catch. | |
Excellent | Dongola City Lake has an excellent bass population. During the 2021 spring electrofishing survey, 60 bass were collected during the 30-minute survey. Of the 60 bass collected, 36% were over 15 inches, and 17% were over 18 inches. Mean Wr for Largemouth Bass in the sample was 96, indicating relatively good body condition and growth. | |
Location: Dongola City Reservoir is located in Union County west of Dongola. From Dongola, head west on Mill Street/Lake Road and turn north onto Howell Lane/Mill Creek Road.
Description: Dongola City Reservoir is 58 acres in size. There is a single lane boat ramp with dock. There are no restrooms or concessions available.
History and Status of the Sport Fishery: During past years, a spring electrofishing survey was conducted on an annual basis. During 2021, a fall netting survey (trap nets and gill nets) was conducted in addition to the spring electrofishing survey. Moving forward, the lake will be sampled every other year during odd years utilizing both spring electrofishing and fall netting.
