Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Excellent

Bluegill were less abundant in Dutchman Lake during the 2022 survey indicated by a dip in the catch rate to 92/hour, which still fell well above the long term average. 70% of these fish were larger than 6 inches, and 18% fish exceeded 7 inches in length. Bluegill body condition increased as well. These changes are most likely linked to the vegetation control activities being conducted.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Very Good

Largemouth bass abundance in Dutchman Lake in spring 2022 increased compared to the previous year (182/hr electrofishing). Quality of these fish was also better than the previous year, with 60 percent larger than 12 inches and 34% larger than the 15-inch minimum length limit. The largest was just over 8 pounds. Bass body condition increased in 2022 (Wr 92), well within the management plan goal.

REDEAR SUNFISH

Very Good

Redear were collected at a rate of 74 per hour in 2022 and quality increased. 97% of these fish were larger than 7 inches in length, and 30% were longer than 8 inches. Redear body condition remained within the management goal range.

Location: Dutchman Lake is a relatively clear, infertile, 118-acre U.S. Forest Service-owned impoundment located approximately five miles north of Vienna, IL in Johnson County.

Description: The lake is surrounded by forest and has a gravel access road and boat ramp. The Dutchman Lake watershed is large, so significant rains have the potential to quickly raise the water level and decrease transparency.

Additional Lake Information: Ten horsepower outboard motor limit.

Site Regulation:
Largemouth bass – 15 inch length limit, 6 per day creel limit.
Channel catfish – 6 per day creel limit.
