Species

Rank

Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Improving

The number of quality size and larger bluegill (6”-plus) declined to its lowest point in many years. The average size bluegill collected remained relatively unchanged at 5”. The results of this survey indicate that the bluegill fishery will be dominated by smaller individuals than in the past.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Fair

Surveys tend to produce a very low number of channel catfish but site reports indicate anglers have reasonable success although Carp Lake is not thought of as one of the better lakes for channel catfish.

CRAPPIE

Average

Black crappie, which had always been collected in very low number, were the dominant species in the 2019 spring survey outnumbering white crappie by a four to one ratio. Most crappie collected were smaller, younger fish which could result in improved fishing in the coming seasons.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Average

Unlike the 2017 survey in which young-of-the-year bass were very prevalent, electrofishing catch rates declined in 2019 to levels close to the long-term average. Despite the large number of young bass which were present in the 2017 survey, recruitment of those fish appears poor as they failed to be represented in any number in the 2019 survey. Since 2011 the number of stock size and larger bass (8’-plus) in these surveys has steadily declined. The percentage of legal size bass remained unchanged for the last two surveys, and has actually increased over time.

Location: Carp Lake (Lake #8) is located within the Mazonia State Fish and Wildlife Area Main Unit, 3 miles southwest of Braidwood in Grundy County on Illinois Route 53 and Huston Road.

Description: Carp Lake is an intermediate-sized impoundment in the Mazonia Main Unit covering 17.6 surface acres. It is connected by a narrow channel to Gar Lake (Lake #9). Shoreline access is limited by extensive stands of tall reed grass. The lake has a one-lane concrete boat ramp with adjacent parking. Carp Lake is closed to fishing during upland game and waterfowl season. Following the completion of the hunting seasons, it reopens for ice fishing dependent upon ice conditions.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: Carp Lake surveyed on an alternate year basis. Fish stocking is presently limited to channel catfish. No special mercury advisory or other contaminant-related consumption advisories pertain. A variety of other species that can be caught include common carp, bullheads and several gar species.

Additional Lake Information: Trolling motor only. Two pole and line fishing only.
