BLUEGILL

Fair

The catch-per-unit-effort for bluegill in Herrin #2 Lake was the smallest catch rate in four years. However, the proportion of bluegill larger than 6 inches increased to 49%, which exceeded the management plan goal. 14% were also larger than 7 inches. Bluegill condition was slightly substandard for the second year in a row.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Developing

Generally few channel catfish are collected from Herrin #2 Lake during spring electrofishing surveys, and 2016 was no exception, as none were collected. The channel catfish population in Herrin #2 Lake is maintained by IDNR stockings which occur every other year. Site Regulation: 6 per day creel limit.

CRAPPIE

Fair

Both white and black crappie exist in Herrin Lake #2, but these fish don’t always show up in annual surveys. Only three black crappie were included in the 2016 electrofishing sample. These fish ranged in size from 9 to 10 inches in length and displayed fair to poor body condition.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Good

Largemouth bass were collected at an increased rate in spring 2016 that was more than twice the management plan goal. However, quality of these fish decreased and did not meet the goal for the first time in four years. 32% of bass were larger than 12 inches, and 11% were longer than the 15-inch minimum size limit. Bass body condition was also substandard. Site Regulation: 15" length limit and 3 per day creel limit.
