Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Very Good

Bluegill were collected from Arrowhead Lake during the 2016 survey at a rate that was higher than the previous year and nearly identical to the five-year high posted in 2014. Forty-nine percent of bluegill were larger than 6 inches (exceeding the management plan goal), and the proportion larger than 7 inches increased from 19 to 29%. Bluegill body condition was very good.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Very Good

In the 2016 electrofishing survey, channel catfish ranged in size from 11 to 20 inches and were in excellent condition. Channel catfish are stocked every other year to sustain the population. Fishing Regulations: 6 fish per day limit.

CRAPPIE

Poor

Very small numbers of black and white crappie were included in the 2016 Arrowhead Lake sample, and these fish ranged from 8 to 9.5 inches in length. Crappie condition remained substandard. Fishing Regulations: 15 fish per day limit.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Good

Largemouth bass collection a rate in spring 2016 was somewhat lower than recent years, but still much higher than the management plan goal. The percentage of 12-inch and larger bass was higher than the previous six years at 34%, but this index still did not quite achieve the management plan goal. Most bass ranged from 8 to 13 inches in length, but a few were larger than the upper end of the lake’s slot limit of 15 inches and weighed up to 5 pounds. The proportion over 15 inches was 11%, and bass body condition remained slightly substandard. Fishing Regulations: Largemouth bass – 12 to 15-inch protective slot – 2 bass per day under 12 inches and 1 per day over 15 inches

REDEAR SUNFISH

Good

Redear were less abundant than bluegill, as usual, in 2016. 78% of redear were larger than 7 inches in length, and 67% were larger than 8 inches, while 6% were near the 10-inch mark. Redear body condition also remained excellent.
