Fish Status

The bluegill population is average and no bluegill over 7 inches were collected in 2015. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

The CCF population is poor. Only one CCF (22 inches) was collected in 2015. Site Regulation: 6 fish daily limit.

Canvasback Lake has a good crappie population consisting of both black and white crappie. Of the crappie collected in 2015, all were over 11 inches in length. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

An electrofishing survey is the best way to analyze the largemouth bass population in a lake. Because electrofishing is not an option at this lake, very little is known about the population. Only two largemouth bass (16-18 inches) were collected during 2015 spring trap netting. Site Regulation: 5 fish under 14" and one fish over 18"; 14-18 inch protected slot (no posession).

This Lake is stocked annually with muskie. IDNR collected one 36-inch muskie from this lake in the spring of 2014. If you catch a tagged muskie from Canvasback Lake, DO NOT REMOVE THE TAG. Please contact Shawn Hirst, IDNR Fisheries Biologist by phone at 618-687-4546 or email at with the following information: date of catch, length of fish, 5-digit tag number.

Only two redear sunfish (8-9 inches) have been collected in 9 years of sampling. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

Although not stocked in this lake, walleye have been collected in 3 of the last 7 netting surveys. No walleye were collected in 2015. It is believed walleye entered this lake during previous high water events.
