Fish Status

The bluegill population structure can only be described as average. One bluegill (4 inches) was collected in 2015. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

No channel catfish have been collected in 9 years of sampling at Mallard Lake. However, IDNR observed an angler catching a 14 pound catfish during the 2012 survey. Site Regulation: 6 fish daily limit.

Mallard Lake has an average crappie population consisting of both black and white crappie. Two black crappie (11-12 inches) and seven white crappie (9-15 inches) were collected in the 2015 trap netting survey. Although the number of fish collected at this lake during surveys is typically low, many of the crappie collected are over 9 inches in length. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

An electrofishing survey is the best way to analyze the largemouth bass population in a lake. Because electrofishing is not an option at this lake, very little is known about the largemouth population at this lake. No largemouth bass were collected in the 2015 spring trap netting survey at this lake. Bass (18 inches) have been collected in previous surveys. Site Regulation: Creel limit of 5 fish under 14" and one fish over 18"; there is a protected slot of 14-18" (no possession).

Location: Pyramid State Park is located south of Pinckneyville in Perry County. Mallard Lake is located on the Denmark Section of Pyramid State Park. The Denmark Section is accessed off of Pyatt-Cutler Road. From State Route 127 head west on Pyatt-Cutler Road. About 7 miles west of Pyramid State Park turn south into the Denmark Section.

Description: Mallard Lake is located on the Denmark Section of Pyramid State Park. Facilities at this 75-acre strip cut lake include a boat launch, floating dock, and bathrooms.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: As a result of high water conductivity, electrofishing is not an effective sampling tool at this lake. All information is based on spring trap netting surveys.

Additional Lake Information: Mallard Lake has a 10 HP motor limit. 2 pole and line fishing only. All live bait in excess of 8" must be rigged with a quick set rig. Please note that fishing is prohibited from November 1 through February 28. Maps of 23 lakes located on the Arch Portion of Pyramid State Park can be obtained via email by sending a request to
