Fish Status

Very Good

Bluegill were collected from West Frankfort Old City Lake in 2016 at a rate that was similar to high numbers recorded in years 2010-2012. Quality of these fish met the management plan goal, as 72% were larger than 6 inches, but only 6% exceeded 7 inches in length. Bluegill body condition was excellent.

Fair numbers of channel catfish were included in the 2016 West Frankfort Old City Lake sample, as evidenced by the electrofishing catch rate that was identical to the previous year. The length of these fish ranged from 16 to 29 inches. Body condition was excellent. The channel catfish population of West Frankfort Old City Lake is maintained through supplemental stockings accomplished every other year. Site Regulation: 6 fish daily limit.

Crappie were relatively common during spring 2016. White and black crappie were collected at rates of 118 and 28 fish per hour of electrofishing, respect tively. However, most of these fish were 6 to 8 inches in length, and only a few white crappie were present in the 9 to 14 inch range. 7% of white crappie and 29% of black crappie were larger than 8 inches. Body condition of both crappie species was slightly substandard.

Largemouth bass were found in West Frankfort Old City Lake in fair numbers in spring 2016, and these fish exhibited fair to good quality. Of the fish collected in the annual electrofishing survey, 54% were over 12 inches, which met the management plan goal, and 33% were larger than 15 inches, which represented an increase compared to the previous year. Bass body condition was acceptable. Site Regulation: 15" length limit, 3 fish daily limit.

As usual, small numbers of redear were included in the 2016 survey of West Frankfort Old City Lake, compared to bluegill. All of the fish collected during sampling were 7.5 inches or larger, and 33% were over 10 inches in length. Redear body condition was excellent.

Location: West Frankfort Old City Lake is located approximately 4 miles east-southeast of West Frankfort, Illinois and one mile south of Route 149 in Franklin County.
