Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Good

Bluegill were collected from West Frankfort Old City Lake in 2015 at a rate similar to the previous year. Quality of these fish met the management plan goal, as 48% were larger than 6 inches, but only 12% exceeded 7 inches in length. Bluegill body condition was excellent.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Fair

Fair numbers of channel catfish were included in the 2015 West Frankfort Old City Lake sample, as evidenced by the electrofishing catch rate similar to the previous yea. The length of these fish ranged from 12 to 29 inches. The channel catfish population of West Frankfort Old City Lake is maintained through supplemental stockings every other year. Site Regulation: 6 per day creel limit.

CRAPPIE

Fair

Crappie were relatively common during spring 2015. White and black crappie were collected, however most of these fish were 6 to 8 inches in length, and only a few white crappie were present in the 9 to 14-inch range. 7% of white crappie and 12% of black crappie were larger than 8 inches. Body condition of white crappie was within the acceptable range, while black crappie condition was slightly substandard.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Fair

Largemouth bass were found in West Frankfort Old City Lake in fair to good numbers in spring 2015, and these fish exhibited fair to good quality. Forty-eight percent of fish collected were over 12 inches, which met the management plan goal, but only 7% were larger than 15 inches, which was lower than the previous year. Bass body condition was very good. Site Regulation: 15” length limit and 3 per day creel limit.

REDEAR SUNFISH

Good

Small numbers of redear were included in the 2015 survey of West Frankfort Old City Lake when compared to bluegill. All of the fish collected were 9 inches or larger, and 25% were over 9.5 inches in length. Redear body condition was excellent.

Location: West Frankfort Old City Lake is located approximately 4 miles east-southeast of West Frankfort, Illinois and one mile south of Route 149 in Franklin County.

Description: West Frankfort Old City Lake is a relatively shallow, 147-acre, city-owned impoundment. The lake is mostly surrounded by woods and has one boat ramp.
