Fish Status

Black crappie averaged 8.0 inches and ranged in size from 5.4 to 11.5 inches. This lake has one of the best crappie populations in the area.

Bluegill have a very healthy population, ranging in size from 3.1 to 8.0 inches, with an average size of 5.9 inches. Fifty-six percent of the catch was longer than six inches.

Six common carp were captured during the most recent survey. They ranged in size from 20.7 to 30.5 inches, averaging 24.7 inches. The heaviest one weighed 16.6 pounds.

No channel catfish were captured in this survey but they have been previously stocked. Fishing for channel catfish should be better in the future as 10,000 four and a half inch channel catfish were stocked in 2012 and 2014.

Very Good

In our 2014 survey, largemouth bass were found in abundance. These fish ranged in size from 5.8 to 19.5 inches, and weighed up to 4.3 lbs. The average bass in the sample was 12.7 inches long. Thirty-one percent of the sample exceeded 14 inches. Multiple year classes and abundant adult fish after a harsh winter indicate this is a well designed lake with a healthy bass population.

Location: Lake Patterson is located at the Oakhurst Forest Preserve on Fifth Avenue in Aurora, approximately 1/2 mile east of Farnsworth Avenue (1680 Fifth Avenue, Aurora IL).

Description: Lake Patterson is a 48-acre dug lake with a maximum depth of 20 feet and an average depth of 9 feet. The lake is owned by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County (FPDKC). Lake Patterson is the larger part of 55-acre wetland complex that designed for flood control. There is good shoreline fishing access available via a gravel trail around the lake. This lake does offer boat access (electric motors only) which is extremely rare in the Chicagoland Area. Electric motors are allowed and a boat ramp is available.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: In 2014, the FPDKC entered into a cooperative management agreement with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to facilitate fisheries management activities. Channel catfish are occasionally stocked to supplement the population. Site-specific regulations apply. An electrofishing survey took place in May 2014.

Abundant largemouth bass and bluegill should offer anglers plenty of action in this urban fishery. A nice crappie population should offer some nice spring-time action too. A newly started channel catfish program should offer great fishing for this species in the future. Golden shiner and green sunfish were also caught in our survey. Yellow bass have been captured in previous surveys in Lake Patterson.

Additional Lake Information: Electric motors are allowed and a boat ramp is available.
