The bluegill population structure can only be described as average. During the 2015 fall electrofishing survey, no bluegill over 8 inches were collected.
IDNR stocks 8-10” channel catfish into Lake Murphysboro every year. These annual stockings have produced excellent angling opportunities for 2-5 pound channel catfish.
Lake Murphysboro has an excellent crappie population consisting of both black and white crappie. Crappie over 2 pounds are caught each year. Of the crappie collected in the 2015 fall electrofishing survey, 49% were over nine-inches in length and 26% were over 10 inches in length.
The opportunity to catch bass over 15 inches and weighing 2–3 pounds is good in this lake. During the 2015 fall electrofishing survey, of the largemouth bass collected, 11% measured 15 inches or better. Nine percent of the bass collected were over 18 inches in length, which was the third highest percentage on record. This lake receives more fishing pressure for crappie and bluegill than largemouth bass.
The redear population shows more promise. Some redear measuring over 8 inches in length are collected annually in surveys.
