Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Good

We subsampled due to higher densities in this water body; these individuals ranged from 2" to 7.5" and tipped the scale at .28 lbs. 51% were 6" and 12% were at a minimum of 7" in length.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Fair

We only captured 3 catfish in 2013 sampling. These cats measured from 17.5" to 27.5", and weighed up to 10 lbs.

CRAPPIE

Very Good

During sampling, crappie were found measuring from 6.5" to 13", and topped the scale at .95 lbs. in total weight. 29% were at least 9", 19% reached 10", and 7% attained at least 12" in total length.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Good

The fall 2013 sample yielded fish ranging from 4" to 21" and weighing up to 5.1 lbs. 25% were 15", 14% topped 18", and 4% exceeded 20" in total length.

REDEAR SUNFISH

Very Good

During sampling, "shell crackers" were boated from 6.5" to 9.75" and weighed up to .75 lbs. in total weight.76%reached 8", and 27% attained at least 9" in total length.

Location: Gillespie Old City Lake is located 3 miles northwest of Gillespie, IL in Macoupin County.

Description: Gillespie Old City Lake is 71 acres with a shoreline length of 5 miles, watershed of 3,300 acres, maximum depth of 21 feet, and average depth 8.8 feet. It is owned by the City of Gillespie and is cooperatively managed with IDNR Fisheries. This small water body is predominantly used for recreational fishing only.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: Approximately 14 species occupy this fertile water body. At this time, only channel catfish are stocked periodically by IDNR Fisheries.

Additional Lake Information: 2 pole and line fishing only.This lake has a trolling motor only regulation. There is one concrete ramp on the north end of the impoundment. There is also camping available at this site.
