FISHING REPORT DATE: 07-25-08

FISHING AREA: Weldon Springs is a 29-acre, spring-fed lake, which ranges in depth from 10 to 28 feet. The water in the lake is constantly fed by the same source that feeds the springs. The shoreline is 2 miles long and has bank fishing platforms available and a boat launching ramp. Anglers may rent boats on site and only electric boat motors are allowed. Disabled visitors will find a fishing dock available for them. Nature has provided the area with a wide variety of hardwood tree species, beautiful wildflowers and a variety of wildlife. Visitors have the opportunity to enjoy picnicking, fishing, wildlife carving, amphitheaters, trails, and the springs. The lake is located southeast of Clinton in Dewitt County. The State Recreation Area is located south of Illinois Route 10 and east of Illinois Route 51.

WATER CONDITIONS: Dam access is closed due to CDB spillway bridge rehab project. Even though the dredging in contining, the lake is pretty much back to normal. Fishermen are catching fish.

NOTES: Fishermen and boaters can access the lake.

FISH: Crappie ... Slow; Fish have moved out into deeper water and are scattered; look for submerged brush and lay downs with a jig and minnow.

FISH: Bluegill ... Good; Night crawlers and wax worms are getting bites along the shorelines.

FISH: Bass ... Good; Crankbaits are being used near Veterans Point and near the dam.

FISH: Catfish ... Fair; Chicken livers are working for the anglers near Veterans Point and dam area.

NOTES: Weldon Springs will offer a Kids' Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 7, 2008 to celebrate Free Fishing Days. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the concession. The Derby will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for number of fish caught from the bank in three age divisions; 6 and under, 7-8-9, and 10-11-12. There is no registration fee. Bait will be available for purchase at the concession. In the case of heavy rain or lightning, the event will be cancelled. Free Fishing Days is an opportunity for those who want to give fishing a try, or those who haven't fished for awhile, to experience the fun of one of our most popular forms of outdoor recreation. Young people and adults alike can discover the joys of fishing and develop an appreciation for our lakes, rivers and streams and the wildlife in and around them. Illinois and non-resident anglers can fish without purchasing annual fishing licenses, salmon stamps or inland trout stamps during the four-day Free Fishing Days promotion June 6 - 9, 2008.
