FISHING REPORT DATE: 06-27-08

WATER CONDITIONS: Rock River water levels are up and above flood in most areas. Fishing activity continues to be slowed due to the water conditions.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are 4 feet above flood stage and on a steady stand. The river has been closed for boats and fishing is not good, but Rock Cut State Park and the Kishwaukee River is good.

FISH: Bluegill ... Good; Fish are scattered due to the water conditions, but biting at Bowman Park at Cherry Valley near the banks on leaf worms, wax worms, and red worms.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; The Kishwaukee River is producing on lures and top water baits.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Good; Fish are very aggressive and easy to catch; anglers using night crawlers, leeches, small spinners, small crankbaits, and anything that swims around; anglers can keep fish now.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Rock Cut State Park is producing on stink bait.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high and the river has been closed this past week. Delavan Lake continues to be the best fishing in the area.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Fish are being taken at Delavan Lake with 1/4 to 1/2 ounce spinner baits.

NOTE: A catfish tournament will be held July 19th by the Rock Valley Anglers Club; sign up on line or at Gander Mountain; adults $5.00; children $3.00. Registration forms available.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Oregon Area

WATER CONDITIONS: water levels are steady and holding at 1 1/2 feet above flood stage with a pretty good current; tons of drum to catch!.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; An angler reported catching a 22 inch fish on the east side this past week.

FISH: White Bass ... Fair; A few fish are being reeled in by the fishermen.

FISH: Freshwater Drum... Good; Lots!! of fish are being caught near the banks with worms.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; Big ones! are being reeled in from areas out of the current; Fish weighing 47 pounds, and several weighing 30 pounds were reported this past week being caught on bluegill, suckers, and plastics like a 4 inch shad.

FISHING AREA: Rock River -Dixon Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high and dirty. The river has been closed this past week.

FISH: Crappie ... Slow; Fish are scattered due to the water conditions.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; Nice sized fish are being taken by the dam with tails and minnows.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; The Grandy Tour area is best; can keep fish now.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Slow; Fishermen are doing o.k. in area lakes.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Real Good; Anglers are successful in backwater areas and slow water are producing on shrimp, cheese bait, and chicken livers; a few on night crawlers.

FISH: Drum ... Good; Lots of fish being taken from the backwater areas on night crawlers.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; Smaller sized fish from 12 to 18 pound average are biting on gold fish and chubs; a few on night crawlers.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rock Falls Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are dropping a little bit. The river has been closed in this area this past week. Best fishing in area ponds and creeks.

FISH: Carp ... Good; Anglers continue to be successful bow fishing in the backwater areas.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Sterling Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high; Lawrence Park continues to be closed this past week. Several pond fishing.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair to Good; Minnows are selling.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Night crawlers, leeches and cheese bait are producing.

FISH: Carp ... Fair to Good; Fishermen are successful with worms in the backwater areas.

NOTE: Go to H & R Bait Shop in Sterling and get needed fishing supplies.


FISHING AREA: Rock River - Milan Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are way up and clowdy, but beginning to drop. The Milan Bridge area and the canal behind the bait shop is producing fish.

FISH: Crappie .. Good; 1/3 to 1/2 pound sized fish are being taken on red worms and wax worms.

FISH: Bluegill ... Good; Anglers are successful with pieces of dew worms catching 1/2 to 1 pound fish.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Spoons and plastic frogs are producing 1 to 2 pound fish.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; 4 to 10 pound fish are being caught on leeches in the Milan Bridge area.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up and flooding. The river has been closed for boats.

NOTE: An angler reported fishing in the flooded City Park on the north end of town. He said second base is really good fishing! They're biting off second base!!

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; Fish are moving deeper as weather temperatures warm.

FISH: Bluegill ... Really Good; Fish are biting at Bowman Park at Cherry Valley near the banks on leaf worms, wax worms, and red worms.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Bowman Lake near Cherry Park is producing on lures during early morning hours; Rapala's and top water baits are also producing.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; An angler reported catching a 9 pounder at Rock Cut State Park with a leech from a boat.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Very Good; Anglers are successful fishing the flooded wood areas.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; If you can get to the deeper holes the fishing is good with stink bait or minnows.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high and the river has been closed this past week. Delavan Lake is the best this week.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Anglers are successful at Delavan Lake using 1/4 to 1/2 ounce spinner baits.

WATER CONDITIONS: water levels are 1 1/2 feet above flood stage with a pretty good current; the levels should crest just before the weekend.

FISH: Freshwater Drum... Good; Lots of fish are being caught near the banks; worms will work.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; Nice sized fish are being reeled in from areas out of the current with bluegill and suckers; the area is hard to get too due to the increasing water levels. Fish weighing 20 pounds, 21, 24, and 27 pounds were reported this past week.

FISHING AREA: Rock River -Dixon Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up and flooding; water is high and dirty with a current and really pouring across the dam. The river has been closed this past week.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Very Good; The backwater areas are producing on shrimp, worms, minnows, and chicken livers.

FISH: Carp ... Good; Lots of fish being taken from the backwater areas on a variety of baits.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up. Too much water. The river is closed in this area. Best fishing in ponds and creeks.

FISH: Carp ... Good; Anglers are successful bow fishing in the backwater areas.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair to Good; Anglers are successful fishing the deeper holes with jigs and minnow of area lakes.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Leeches are working mostly, but a night crawler gets the job done once in a while.

FISH: Carp ... Fair to Good; Fishermen are using worms in the backwater areas.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are way up, fast, and dirty.

FISH: Crappie .. Good; 1/4 to 1/2 pound sized fish are being caught with minnows and red worms from shallow water.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Spoons and plastic frogs are producing 1 to 2 pound fish.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; 5 to 7 pound fish are being caught on leeches and shrimp near the Milan bridge.

WATER CONDITIONS: Rock River water levels are up, several inches of rainfall have been received this past week throughout the river watershed.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up and the river is full; more rainfall received; very few boats out.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; Anglers are catching some fish that are out in boats.

FISH: Bluegill ... Really Good; Fish are biting at area lakes; Rock Cut State Park, Olsen Lake, and Pierce Lake; near the banks on leaf worms, wax worms, and red worms.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Bowman Lake near Cherry Park is producing on lures during early morning hours; Rapala's and top water baits are also producing.

FISH: Walleye ... Slow; Fishermen have to work for them, but are catcing a few from boats; sizes are a little larger than last week.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Very Good; Lots of fish are being caught with Doc's stink bait and worms at Rock Cut State Park, Olsen Lake and Pierce Lake.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; Best spot is up against the dam and in the deeper holes; night fishing is best in the shallows; fish with stink bait and minnows.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up. Bowman Lake is great in this area!

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Lots of bigger sizes, average from 13 to 15 inches, are being taken with Bandit crankbaits and plastic worms in green pumpkin seed color; dark green colors work best in this lake; use a lift and drop technique.

WATER CONDITIONS: water levels are up 3 feet with a strong current and debris; 2 inches + rainfall received and hot weather temperatures.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Good; Shrimp is the bait of choice this week; look for them south of the dam on the east side.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up again; high and dirty; water is moving over the dam pretty hard from recent rainfall.

FISH: Crappie ... Slow; Smaller sizes are being taken with minnows.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Spotty; Creeks and area lakes best with minnows, worms, and spinner baits.

FISH: smallmouth Bass ... Spotty; Spinners, minnows, and worms are producing in area lakes and creeks.

FISH: White Bass ... Real Good; Anglers are successful; catching them like crazy from along the shorelines with minnows.

FISH: walleye ... Slow; Smaller sized fish are biting on minnows, leeches and spinners; just a couple caught this past week.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Very Good; Lots of fish are biting on shrimp, cheese bait,shad guts, dip bait, cut bait,and worms in shallower water. Most fish from 3 to 5 pounds, but up to 10 pounds being caught.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; Bigger sized fish are biting below the Peoria Bridge; A 30 pounder and a 32 pounder was reported this past week.

FISH: Carp ... Good; Action is good with corn and dough bait. Lots of fish being reeled in.

FISH: Drum ... Good; Most everyone is successful with worms. Lots of fish being caught.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up and over pool from more rainfall received this past week. Lots of rain!

FISH: Crappie ... Slower; The Hennipen Canal and area lakes are producing nice sized fish; anglers must work for them.

FISH: White Bass & Smallmouth Bass ... Fair; Toss wax worms under a bobber in the shallower water near structure, docks, or rocks.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; Fishing acrivity has slowed this past week but they are catching some from the deeper holes near the rip rap.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Put Night crawlers, dip Bait, shad, or shrimp near the newly covered shorelines. A few flatheads are also being reeled in.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are coming up again. Quite a few fishing.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; A few fish are being taken with minnows from the shallows.

FISH: Bluegill ... Fair to Good; Anglers using wax worms and red wigglers.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair to Good; Look for them near the dam with jig and a minnow.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Fish the river near the lower dam with night crawlers and cut bait; good sized leeches will also attract attention.

FISH: Carp ... Fair to Good; Backwater areas are producing fish with worms.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Milan Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up and clowdy from recent rainfall. Steel Dam area is providing the best fishing.

FISH: Bluegill .. Good; 1/4 to 1/2 pound sized fish are being caught with red worms.

FISH: Striped Bass ... Good; White spinners and crankbaits are best at Lake George and Steel Dam; fish are 1 to 3 pounds.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Frogs and black spinners are producing 1 to 3 pound fish.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; 6 to 10 pound fish are being caught on leeches, shrimp and stink bait at Steel Dam in deeper water.

WATER CONDITIONS: Rock River water levels are falling, but several inches of rainfall have been received this past week. Fishing is good. Plan to fish during FREE FISHING DAYS, June 6th-9th.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels continue to be high, but the fish are really biting! Don't miss out on the free fishing days this weekend.

FISH: Bluegill ... Really Good; Fish are on the banks; biting really good on leaf worms and red worms; wax worms are in third place.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Good; Anglers are very successful in the Kiswaukee River; lots of fish being reeled in with little crankbaits, small minnows and crankbaits. Catch and release.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Fish continue to spawn near the banks in area ponds.

FISH: Walleye ... Very Good; Lots of smaller sizes being reeled in this past week.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Very Good; Lots of fish are being caught with Doc's stink bait in the Kishwaukee River.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Good; Success in better every week; 25 to 40 pound fish are being caught at night on stink bait; they start to bite about 8:00 to 9:00 p.m.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up a little and muddy. Fishing activity is slow.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; Offer minnows or jigs in clearer water of area lakes and ponds.

FISH: Bass ... Slow; Anglers successful dragging jigs or casting crankbaits.

WATER CONDITIONS: water levels are dropping; fishing is pretty fair in this area. Enjoy fishing during Free Fishing Days, June 6th-9th.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair to Good; Look for them near the wall and in area ponds and lakes with minnows.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Fish are spawning; offer them a minnow.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Good; Anglers are having a ball south of the dam on the east side using 3 to 4 inch suckers; fish have been in the 10 pound range.

FISH: Carp ... Good; Anglers are successful with night crawlers.

FISH: Walleye ... Good; A 17 inch fish was reported this past week near the dam; most fish have been smaller sized.

FISH: Muskie ... Fair; A 30 pounder was reported taken from a private lake this past week.

FISH: Crappie ... Slow; A few are being taken with minnows.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Grandy Tour and Buffalo Park areas have fair angling success with little spinners,leeches, and minnows.

FISH: smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; The Grandy Tour and Buffalo Park areas are fair on little spinners,leeches, and minnows.

FISH: White Bass ... Good; Anglers are successful below Dixon Dam with minnows.

FISH: walleye ... Spotty; Smaller sized fish are biting on minnows, leeches and spinners; a few being caught.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Fair to Good; Smaller sized fish are biting on shrimp, cheese bait, cut bait, night crawlers, and minnows in shallower water. Larger sizes are being taken with shad gut and chicken liver from deeper water.

FISH: Flathead Catfish ... Fair to Good; Smaller sized fish are biting on gold fish.

FISH: Carp ... Good; Action is good with corn and dough bait.

FISH: Drum ... Good; Offer them worms. Quite a few fish being caught; a 14 1/2 pounder was weighed in this past week.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels have dropped 10 inches but more rainfall was received this past week; good clarity; water temperature is still a chilly 65 degrees.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair to Good; The Hennipen Canal and area lakes are producing nice sized fish; anglers must work for them.

FISH: White Bass & Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Offer wax worms under a bobber in the shallower water near structure, docks, or rocks.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; Angling success has slowed this past week but they are catching some from the deeper holes near the rip rap.

FISH: Catfish ... Very Good; Dip Bait, shad, and shrimp are producing from along the shorelines. A few flatheads are also being reeled in.

FISH: Catfish ... Very Good; Fish are being taken from the backwater areas with baby shad and cheese bait.

FISH: Carp ... Fair to Good; Backwater areas are producing fish with worms.

FISH: Striped Bass ... Fair to Good; 1 to 2 pounders are hitting on minnows and white jigs.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; A few fish from 1 to 3 pounds are biting on pike minnows.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Frogs and black spinners are producing 1 to 3 pound fish.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels continue to be high, but fishermen can get their boats in now; lots of fishing action in the shallows and area lakes. The Kishwaukee River is producing lots of smallmouth bass and catfish.

FISH: Crappie ... Good; Rock Cut State Park and Bowman Park are producing good numbers of fish. Fish are completing their spawn.

FISH: Bluegill ... Good; Fish are interested in bedding; anglers catching them in area lakes from the shallows.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Good; Anglers are very successful in the Kiswaukee River; lots of fish being reeled in with little crankbaits, small minnows and crankbaits. Catch and release.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Good; Some fish are spawning near the banks all over in area ponds.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Good; Lots of fish are being caught with Doc's stink bait and suckers from the Kishwaukee River.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are up a little; the river is open; fishing is fairly slow in this area due to the water levels.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; Lower minnows or jigs in fairly shallow water of area lakes and ponds.

FISH: Bass ... Fair; Anglers successful dragging jigs or throwing crankbaits at Pierce and Olson Lakes; some fish hanging out and warming up near shallow big rocks that stick out of the water and warm up from the sunshine.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Doc's cold weather stink bait is getting bites in 2 feet of water near the shorelines; an angler reported catching 15 while fishing this past week.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high and flooded; Rock Cut State Park is producing well; the fish are also biting at Bowman Park. The storms this past week have caused the water at Rock Cut State Park Lake to look like chocolate milk, but the fish are still biting.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair to Good; Offer minnows or jigs near the newly growing week beds at Rock cut State Park and Bowman Park Lakes.

FISH: Largemouth Bass ... Fair to Good; fish are biting in the backwater and area lakes on spinner baits and on dark colored jig and pigs.

FISH: Catfish ... Fair to Good; Look for them following carp in the shallower backwater areas.

FISH: Carp ... Fair to Good; Put worms on the bottom at the mouths of creeks.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high. It's been cool, wet, and muddy; the fish are biting and the grass is greening up.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; Anglers are successful catching fish in the warmer backwater areas and canal with small minnows.

NOTE: Finding pre-spawn crappie ... Northern Illinois crappie anglers proclaim that crappie start biting when the dogwood blossoms are in full bloom and waterlily stems start greening up. These visible signs usually appear when the water temperatures are in the mid-50s to mid-60s. The surface water is usually several degrees warmer than the water below. Crappie move up into the warmer surface waters during late winter and early spring to warm themselves. Crappie enjoy the warm shorelines, especially those with timber or brush present. Fishermen set rod's with bobbers three to four feet deep and 24 to 14 inches deep to find the fish. Other anglers just hang a curly tail jig under their bobber or use minnows and let the wind do the work by drifting and jigging for them. Cast your biat with the wind ahead of your boat and make a series of long drifts. When you find fish, remember the spot or mark it with a GPS unit.

Other anglers just hang a curly tail jig under their bobber or use minnows and let the wind do the work by drifting and jigging for them. Cast your biat with the wind ahead of your boat and make a series of long drifts. When you find fish, remember the spot or mark it with a GPS unit.

FISH: Bluegill ...Good; Put red worms or wax worms under a bobber in the backwater sloughs and feeder creeks.

FISH: Walleye ... Excellent; Decent sized fish are being taken from the deeper holes at the lower dam and canal with large minnows; it's also a possibility to find them at the mouths of creeks and by the upper dam where the river goes into the canal.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; nice sized fish are biting at the lower dam and in the backwater creeks. Night crawlers and red worms are working.

FISH: Trout ... Good; Anglers are happy with the sizes of fish and are successful using power bait and Berkleys trout bait.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Milan Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels continue to be high, but are dropping a little. Not much fishing activity.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high and over the banks. Walleye fishing is good and anglers are also finding catfish. Fish are aware that it is spring time; they are moving into the shallower water, just waiting for warmer conditions.

NOTE: The 2008 spring trout fishing season in Illinois opens at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday April 5th. The spring trout opener is always a big day in Illinois. It is a great way to begin the new fishing season. More than 60,000 rainbow trout will be stocked in more than 40 bodies of water where spring trout fishing is permitted. The trout-stocking program in Illinois is made possible through the sale of inland trout stamps to those anglers who participate. The stamps are available for $6.50 each at DNR direct license and permit vendors, IDNR offices in Springfield, Chicago, Alton, Benton, Clinton and Sterling, and may be purchased with a credit card through the IDNR web site at http://dnr.state.il.us. To legally participate in the trout fishing program, anglers must have a valid Illinois fishing license and an inland trout stamp.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Lots of water; the river is up and high; creeks are running; fishing for walleye and northern's is good.

FISH: Walleye ... Great; Lots and lots of fish are being taken with jigs or walleye minnows; best fishing is at the mouths of creeks; if out in a boat try big heavy jigs for results.

FISH: Muskie ... Good; Look for them up in the creeks; pre-spawning conditions.

FISH: Northern Pike ... Good; fish are biting on big shiners.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Fish the quiet spots in the creeks, out of the swift current, with Doc's cold weather stink bait.

NOTE: Visit Rockford Bait in Rockford for your fishing supplies. A very friendly and helpful bait shop.


FISHING AREA: Rock River - Rockford Area

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high and romping from ice melting to the north.

FISH: Walleye ... Fair; Anglers are occasionally catching a few fish with minnows and jigs.

FISH: Northern Pike ... Good; Fish are running at the dam; offer them a jig.

NOTE: Olson Lake and Pierce Lake have open water, but the bays and boat ramps remain iced in.

FISHING AREA: Rock River - Oregon Area

WATER CONDITIONS: water levels are high at 12 feet; flood stage is 13 feet; this weekend would be a great time to fish; the fish are biting!

FISH: walleye ... Excellent; nice sized fish are being taken; the largest reported this week measured 19.5 inches in length; lots being caught in the 20 to 22 inch range; the males are as big as the females with shad in their bellies; minnows in hot pink colors and orange seem to be the most succesful. Twister tails, walleye assassins and some shad bodies being used.

FISH: Crappie ... Fair; anglers are having success near stumps and brush piles using minnows or jigs tipped with minnows.

FISH: Channel Catfish ... Good; fish are starting to bite on red worms and night crawlers.

FISH: Smallmouth Bass ... Fair to Good; Fishing success started last week; don't miss out!

FISH: Muskie ... Good; A 48 inch fish and a 42 inch fish were reported caught while jigging.

FISH: Northern Pike ... Fair; a few fish have been caught near the dam with jigs; anglers are catching them while fishing for walleye.

FISHING AREA: Rock River -Dixon Area

WATER CONDITIONS: The river is high and going up; the water is fairly clear for the depth; warmer weather temperatures are expected and will hopefully melt the last of the remaining snow piles.

FISH: walleye ... Fair to good; Anglers are successful catching a few fish below the dam with twister tails with lead heads or lead heads tipped with a minnow with a slider lure. Nice sized fish are being taken; some over 9 pounds; anglers are reporting fish that are full of eggs and they are releasing them.

FISH: Catfish ... Good; Fishermen are reeling them in with red worms from the shallows; also some reports of night crawlers producing results.

WATER CONDITIONS: Water levels are high. Walleye and Catfish are biting. Don't miss out on the activity.

FISH: Crappie ... Spotty; A few nice sized fish are being taken in the warmer backwater areas and creeks with jig and minnows.

NOTE: Finding pre-spawn crappie ... Northern Illinois crappie anglers proclaim that crappie start biting when the dogwood blossoms are in full bloom and waterlily stems start greening up. These visible signs usually appear when the water temperatures are in the mid-50s to mid-60s. The surface water is usually several degrees warmer than the water below. Crappie move up into the warmer surface waters during late winter and early spring to warm themselves. Crappie enjoy the warm shorelines, especially those with timber or brush present. Fishermen set rod's with bobbers three to four feet deep and 24 to 14 inches deep to find the fish.
