TAMPIER LAKE STATUS REPORT SUMMARY
WALLEYE: TAMPIER LAKE (Cook County) - Tampier Lake has
one of the best walleye populations in Cook County. It has been stocked
with walleye fry and fingerlings since 1986 and offers the opportunity
to catch fish over 10 pounds. Walleye can be difficult to catch because
of the abundance of forage in Tampier, but they’re there. The primary
forage is gizzard shad. Many walleye collected during surveys are found
in 3 - 4 feet of water directly in weed beds. There is an 18 inch minimum
length limit and a 2 pole and line limit on gear. Tampier Lake is stocked
with 7200 two inch fingerlings annually to maintain their presence.
NORTHERN PIKE: This 160 acre urban lake provides anglers
with some nice angling opportunities. The lake has a population of gizzard
shad as the primary forage so “catching” is probably tougher
than “fishing”, but the fish are there and some nice size
fish have been collected there over the years. Approximately 360 northern
pike are stocked annually to diversify the predator population in the
lake and provide sportfishing opportunities to those who seek these fish.
Pike have been collected in both the marsh north of 131st and south in
the main lake so either portion could hold your next catch.
