Horseshoe Lake
was impounded in 1930 and the main purpose of the Lake is to provide
refuge for waterfowl. The Lake is noted for the number of cypress
and tupelo trees present. Horseshoe Lake is a bottom land lake located
in Alexander County just east of Illinois Route 3, seven miles north
of Cairo near Olive Branch. Numerous public boat launching facilities
are located around the Lake. Only trolling motors are allowed in
the refuge from October 15 through March 1.
The Lake is 1890 acres in size with an average depth of about 2.5 feet. Maximum depth is about 6 feet. Water clarity ranges from 6 inches to 2 feet. Fishing maps of Horseshoe Lake are available from Horseshoe Lake Conservation Area (618-776-5689).
