Blue catfish are now being stocked to create a new trophy catfish fishery.
During our fall 2015 sample, we collected channel catfish ranging from 8” to 15.5” and weighing up to 1.1 lbs. For some odd reason we did not see this species much during this sample. Site regulation: All jugs must be attended at all times while fishing.
The overall crappie population looks tremendous at this time. Numbers are not really high, but quality is exceptional! During the 2015 fall survey, crappie captured measured from 2.5” to 15”, and topped the scale at 1.8 lbs. 71% were a minimum of 10”, 39% were at least 12”, and 4% topped 14” in size. 10 fish daily creel limit per angler and 10” minimum length limit.
Though numbers are uncertain, we capture several 20 to 50 pound individuals each year. From talking to anglers and reading articles, good numbers of this species are caught, with some much larger than 50 pounds.
Coffeen Lake has a solid largemouth bass fishery in place. Reproduction has improved, and fish appear to be recruiting well into larger sizes. For this reason, on April 1, 2016 a new 15” minimum length limit, with a 3 fish per day creel limit will be instituted. In 2015, largemouth bass collected ranged from 2.5” to 21.25” and weighed up to 5.9 lbs. 14% were at least 15”, 6% topped 18”, and 0.7% exceeded 20” in total length.
